Shams & Pepper

Authentic harissa from the Cap Bon peninsula — Mediterranean heritage, honestly told.

What we make

A single great condiment, made the way it has always been made in Tunisia — and given the presentation it has always deserved.

Sun-dried red chilies — Cap Bon, Tunisia
The Story

It began in a kitchen in Nabeul — and ended up on a London shelf, mislabelled.

Shams & Pepper grew out of a simple frustration. Harissa is everywhere in Britain now: supermarkets, restaurants, meal kits. Yet almost none of it names where it comes from. "North African-inspired." "EU origin." Tunisia — the country that has made harissa for centuries — had quietly disappeared from its own product.

"When something travels so far from its origin that the origin disappears, that is not sharing. That is erasure."

Our Mission

To return Tunisian harissa to its rightful name.

We exist to correct a quiet injustice: that one of the Mediterranean's finest condiments has been stripped of its origin on its way to the British shelf. Our mission is to source directly from the producers of Cap Bon, to make harissa exactly as it is made at home in Tunisia, and to label it honestly — by name, by region, by method.

No fusion. No vague geography. No additives. Just the truth of the product, presented with the care it deserves.

Our Vision

A new shelf for Tunisian fine food — built on provenance, not approximation.

We see a future where Tunisian produce sits alongside the great named foods of the Mediterranean — Italian olive oil, Spanish saffron, French sea salt — recognised for its origin and valued accordingly.

Harissa is where we begin. In time, Shams & Pepper aims to carry the wider produce of Cap Bon into kitchens across Britain and beyond, always with the same principle: name the place, honour the maker, and let the quality speak.

What people are saying.

"The first harissa I've found in London that actually tastes like the one my grandmother made in Tunis. The Berber especially — that smoke is the real thing."

Leïla B. Home cook · London

"We put the Traditional on our mezze menu and it sells itself. Customers ask where they can buy a jar to take home. Provenance you can taste."

James Okafor Head Chef · Borough, London

"Beautifully made and beautifully honest. The Fresh Chili has become my everyday — eggs, dressings, everything. You can tell someone actually cares here."

Sophie Marchetti Food writer · Brighton
